Conscious Parenting

Conscious Parenting

For 35 years Pegasus Studios has focused on more than just dance and art classes.  The legacy from our founders, Jane Davis-Munro and Lynda Johnson, was to create a community of nurturing and supporting children, artists and their families.  Jane has set an example of what it means to show up for families by always being available to speak with families and stand by them through the good and the challenging times.  Although it is not easy, our role to show up for our children inside and outside the dance studio has never been more important.

Many years ago, Jane and I were fortunate enough to attend a conference where we heard Jill Molli, a Conscious Discipline Master Instructor speak.  Jane knew right away that she wanted to bring Jill to Toronto to speak to our Pegasus community.  Conscious Discipline was developed by Dr. Becky Bailey for use in schools and daycares and was quickly adapted for parents to use with their children.  Dr. Bailey’s books Conscious Discipline and Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline as well as her workshops and resources focus on teaching children life skills and promoting self-esteem through positive discipline.

Pegasus hosted a full day parent and teacher workshop with Jill Molli that influenced myself in my home with my young children and in my classes.  Being conscious of my own actions as well as the actions of the children in my care enlightened me to a better way to engage and connect with them.  For years I had a handwritten sign in my kitchen that said “Be the person you want your child to become”.

Thirteen years later many of the parents in attendance that day have older teenagers and young adults and are no longer part of the day to day happenings at Pegasus.  We are fortunate to have a new generation of parents at Pegasus Studios who are entrusting their children with us and gifting us with their thoughts and feelings on what it means to be a parent today.

Life has been nothing if not stressful the past two years and it is easy to fall into survival mode. Our children have been in survival mode too and we know that as parents and teachers we are feeling our stress and anxieties reflected back to us from them. This is where we as adults still need to work to be present and to show up in the lives of our children.

The Conscious Parenting author Dr. Shefali Tsabary has brought the concept of being our best selves to our children as a means of connection and behaviour management to the mainstream with interviews on Oprah and various podcasts.  Her message is to become aware of our unconscious states of being and be more present for our children. “Be the person you want your child to become.”

As we navigate our world moving forward, both inside the dance studio and outside, in our homes, families and communities, our hope is that we can all be more conscious of our words and actions in order to help our children be their best selves.
