We cannot thank you enough for making July so great!

PictureLittle Ballerina Fairies getting ready to dance!
Four weeks of summer camp went by in a flash! We’ve had an amazing July watching kids of all ages explore, create, grow and shine. What a pleasure it was to have all of the campers at Pegasus.

Some of our favourite moments were during the open houses. We had fairies, princesses, and even Maypole dancers with our two youngest camps, Little Ballerina and Creative Arts. And our full day camp explored the Wonders of the World, creating art, skits, dances and more based on their research of places like the Colosseum, the Dead Sea, and more.

Our Intensive dancers really pushed their limits and came out the other side as proud, strong dancers. We couldn’t be prouder of what each of them accomplished in their time at Pegasus. They not only built their technique but also had the chance to work on some amazing choreography.

One of the biggest highlights of July was our Newsies Master class and theatre outing. Evan, a Newsies cast member spent one morning with our Intensive dancers teaching them choreography from the show. The following night, we went to see the show and had a blast seeing Evan on stage and the dance that we learned the day before.

Parents, campers, teachers, staff, we cannot thank you all enough for making July a fun and wonderful month.

Now for some rest and re-focusing so we are ready to kick off September with a bang!

We are celebrating the Danny's Urban Fairies project this week! In the spirit of urban fairies, here is an art activity we did the first week of July with our camp for 3-6 year olds. It is quite an in depth activity and we did it over the course of 5 days. It could be a great one for a long rainy day or for splitting up over a week like we did.

Most supplies can be purchased at a Dollar Store, Michaels Craft  Store or other art and craft store

Pictures for each step are below. Have fun and make sure to share pictures with us if you try it! We'd also love to hear any changes or additions you think of, leave a comment so everyone can benefit.

DAY ONE - Creating Fairy Gardens/Playground

A place for fairies to play, hide and play with their garden bug friends. We also love to find places to have tea at the Toadstool table and smell the colourful flowers.

You need:

-white or green round floral foam or Styrofoam disc
-green &/or brown moss
-White glue
-Ribbon
-Straight pins
-Small twigs or branches, pieces of bark
-Green fabric leaves on stems

 Steps:

1.     Pour carefully the white glue over the disc as it is lying on a flat surface

2.     Gently press on the moss to cover the disc (this is the base for the garden)

3.     Stick into the disc the sticks, leaves and bark

4.     Wrap the ribbon around the edge of the disc and secure with straight pins to make it look finished.  Look for green ribbon to add to the garden look or sparkly ribbon for fairies.

  3. Fold and gather the tissue paper up and around the tip of the pipe cleaner

  4. From the bottom, slide the pony bead up to meet the tissue paper and gently slide it over the edge to hold it in place.

Bumble Bee:
  1. With a small amount of model magic or plastercine create/shape a bumble bee

  2. With 2 small pieces of black pipe cleaners make an oval shape to create the wings and insert on each side of the bee.

Add the flowers to the Fairy Garden base by sticking the pipe cleaner in to form.  Let the bumble bee sit in the Garden.

Emergency Summer Activity (for when your kids are driving you nuts)

7/13/2015

Summer in the city can sometimes be a touch harder than anticipated. Activities cost money, take travel time and often have more hype going for them than deserved. On the days when it all just feels like too much to go far from home but you still need to get the kids out of the house, we have an emergency activity for you to keep up your sleeve.

SCAVENGER HUNTS! Do them inside, do them outside, use a downloaded one or make up your own.
Come up with a theme or just go with the flow.

The possibilities are endless here and you may be surprised at how successful they are.
One of our favourites is a neighbourhood walk theme. Simply come up with a list of things that might be found in your neighbourhood and go! We always like to add something that may be tricky. One of our favourite stories is a scavenger hunt done this winter that had deer on the list! Deer in Toronto? Guess how many lawn deer we found? FIVE. You never know where it will take you and it gets you out of the house doing some exercise and having fun.

P.S. Starting in Wednesday you can do a scavenger hunt for Fairy Doors! The Danny's Urban Fairies project officially launches on July 15th. See below for a picture of the Pegasus Fairy Door!

P.P.S. If you want to keep the fun going, include items on your scavenger hunt that can be turned into an art project. Gather leaves, twigs, or other nature items to do a collage, for example, or get the kids to come up with a creative thing to do with the items they found!

We are so excited to be a part of this fun and exciting community project, and so is our resident fairy Pansy!
