Last June, I reflected on the theme of Freedom, inspired by the name of our studio, Pegasus. A flying horse is the perfect symbol for the creative energy that lives within our studio walls. From the very beginning, our co-founder Lynda, a visual artist, envisioned a place where children could feel safe to explore, expand, and express their inborn creativity through art and dance.
As we move into our upcoming 39th season, we continue to keep that vision alive. Thank you to the many parents and children who share our values and recognize the importance of a safe, nurturing environment where children can grow and thrive. This season, our theme A Symphony of Colours gave us new ways to explore what freedom means. We looked at colour through the lens of emotion, creativity, and each child’s unique expression. What emerged was a vibrant spectrum of joy, connection, and discovery. As I return to the idea of freedom, for our children, our studio, and our community, I find myself also reflecting on what it means in our world today. The arts play a vital role in giving children the freedom to express who they are, even when (or before) they have the words to do so. Every child is born with creative potential, and it’s our job to nurture that spark, especially as they grow and encounter influences that may challenge or quiet it. Artistic expression becomes a powerful vehicle for unlocking their inner world and discovering their identity. In a world where children are often asked to sit still, follow the rules, or quiet their voices, Pegasus Studios, and the arts in general, becomes a space where their feelings can move, flow, and fly. Freedom isn’t about the absence of boundaries. Often, it’s through structure that we discover true freedom. In dance, discipline and consistency give children the tools to move with confidence, make choices, and take creative risks. They develop a non-verbal language that strengthens both their bodies and their sense of self. When we give children permission to try, fail, and try again, we free them from the pressure to be perfect. In a nurturing, growth-minded environment, we help them redefine success, not as meeting someone else’s expectations, but as growing, discovering, and expressing their own unique voice. When we let go of the need to be perfect, we open the door to creativity, courage, and joy. Let’s keep the creativity flowing. As we head into summer and begin looking ahead to the fall, we’d love to keep dancing, creating, and exploring together. Whether it’s through our summer camps or stepping back into the studio in September, there’s always space here for your child to grow, express themselves, and simply be who they are. We hope you’ll join us for more movement, more magic, and more moments of discovery. Jane
